License-free radios operate on frequency bands the FCC has designated for general public use without individual licensing. In the U.S., these include FRS (Family Radio Service) and, with some restrictions, GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service). License-free operation comes with trade-offs: limited transmit power (capped at 2 watts for FRS), shared frequencies that any device can access, no ability to program custom frequencies, and no guarantee of channel exclusivity. For small, simple operations in limited areas, license-free radios may be adequate. For enterprise operations — stadiums, hotels, hospitals, large events — they are operationally insufficient.
